Soy Myths Debunked

It seems everyday in the clinic I have to spend some time debunking the silly, and sometimes harmful, myths about soy. There has so much mis-information about this wonderful super food that I thought it was important to address it in this issue.

MYTH #1 Soy causes allergies!

For years now folks have been told that soy causes horrible allergies and will damage a body. What actually is happening here is the ingestion of soy products laced with GMO (genetically modified organisms). Unfortunately, in todays world a significant amount of the soy out there is GMO soy and not soy as it was originally intended. According to

“In the United States, the vast majority of soybeans, 87 percent, are genetically modified organisms, also known as GMOs, according to GMO Compass. These soybeans, which are primarily used for livestock feed, have been altered to include a gene that combats herbicides. According to Natural News, GMO soy is also found in up to 70 percent of food products in U.S. supermarkets, including cereals, breads, soy milk, pasta and meat. GMO soybeans are thought to have potentially dangerous effects on the environment and on human health.”

The following are just some of the harmful effects of GMO, not soy itself:

Liver damage
Allergic reaction - Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK, soon after GM soy was introduced

  4. Dangers from the herbicides

Soy, when eaten as an organic product does not present these dangers. Fortunately, organic soy is becoming easier to obtain and much more common place. MYTH #2 Soy will make my little boy gay!

This one is the most shocking and blatant attempts to deceive the average consumer. It all started from a report that came out a couple of years ago from a researcher trying to prove why there was a rise in homosexuality in boys. Her paper put forth the premise that the amount of phyto-estrogens in soy was feminizing our youth and “turning them gay”.

Let's nip this one in the bud right now. There were two very serious issues with this report. One, she neglected to inform the reader that her research was funded by the diary industry. As we all well know, the dairy industry has been fighting against soy for years. Enough said on this one.

Two, she also neglected to inform the reader on the fact the estrogens in soy are plant based and as such cannot be used directly by the human body. What actually must happen is for the human body to translate the plant estrogen to a human estrogen called Estriol. This is the mildest form of human estrogen and the body is only directed to make it if it is needed at the time of ingesting. In other words, if you don't need it, it doesn't make it. You simply eliminate it. Therefore, since little boys need very little estrogen, their bodies will not make it. Since the estrogen is coming from a whole plant source and not from a synthetic or standardized one, you will not make more than you need. The human is wonderful about judging this for itself.

For myself, I have been eating and drinking soy products for over 30 years and it has had no such effect on me. So, go out and enjoy that barbecued tofu since Summer!
